Man Out Of Time : An Exclusive Inteview With Black Country Communion Keyboardist Derek Sherinian

Keyboardist Derek Sherinian is a man out of time.

For if this were the 1970's, in the heyday of such titans of the keyboards such as Keith Emerson, Rick Wakeman and Jon Jord, he would be among that elite circle of players whom were superstars - back in a time when such talent was not only appreciated, but celebrated in popular music.

Raised in Santa Cruz, California, the young Sherinian began playing piano at the age of five, then  came under the spell of the music of Elton John, particularly his 1973 sprawling double album 'Goodbye Yellow Brick Road'. The album, along with the early influences of The Beatles and Bob Dylan  - both mainstays of his parents' music collection- launched him on a music journey which continues to this day.

While still a junior in high school his musical talent was such that Sherinian was offered a scholarship to the prestigious Berklee School of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. After spending three semesters at the school, the keyboardist felt the time was right to test the waters of being a professional musician. Introduced to the ex drummer of Jimi Hendrix's Band Of Gypsys, Buddy Miles, who was in the process of putting together a touring band, he soon was invited to audition, ultimately impressing enough to earn a spot which saw him touring the so called "Chitlin Circuit" of the Southern United States.

After leaving Miles, he soon landed a gig with rock legend Alice Cooper through the efforts of good friend guitarist Al Pitrelli, now musical director of the hugely successful Trans -Siberian Orchestra, who at the time was holding down the same position for Cooper's band. It was during the time with Alice which saw him perform over 250 shows in support of his 'Trash' album, that he was bestowed with the nickname by the legendary shock rocker, "The Caligula Of The Keyboards". After completing another tour, in 1991 he became offstage keyboardist for hard rockers Kiss, at the suggestion of Eric Singer, who had been bandmates with Sherinian in the Cooper band, whom had also recently been hired as the band's drummer.

However, it was with him joining prog metal superstars Dream Theater that his profile began to rise. More technically challenging musically than anything he had previously been a part of apart from his studies at Berklee, nonetheless he rose to the challenge and in October 1994 he was named as the band's keyboardist just prior to the tour in support of the album 'Awake'. After spending four years with the band, during which time he recorded three albums and completed two world tours, the relationship ran its course, with Sherinian leaving in January 1999 due to the usual suspect i.e. "musical differences".

While being disappointed at the time, leaving the band allowed him the creative freedom to pursue a solo career which continues to the present day. First joining forces with Australian drummer Virgil Donati for his first offering in 1999, 'Planet X', it soon led to them forming the progressive rock-fusion group of the same name, releasing three albums, 2000's 'Universe', 2002's 'MoonBabies' and 2007's 'Quantum'. A live effort, 'Live From Oz', recorded in Melbourne, Australia was released in 2002. All feature technically advanced playing completely at odds of what is currently popular in the mainstream.

Aside from the albums recorded with Planet X, Sherinian has carved out a niche for himself in the progressive metal scene, assembling several fusion influenced solo projects which have seen him attract such guitar luminaries as Al DiMeola, Steve Lukather, Yngwie Malmsteen, Slash, John Petrucci. John Sykes and Zakk Wylde to record with him.

Favoring a guitar heavy rock based approach to fusion ala one of his musical heroes Jeff Beck, it allows an energy to come through the recordings, setting him apart from most jazz fusion in the process, making the music appeal to fans of technical heavy metal as well. In addition, touring with several well-known artists, including Billy Idol and the aforementioned Yngwie Malmsteen has reaffirmed his ability to adapt to ever changing musical genres with ease.

Earlier this year Sherinian was approached by uber producer Kevin Shirley, to join vocalist Glenn Hughes, drummer Jason Bonham, and blues guitar titan Joe Bonamassa in Anglo -Rock "Supergroup" Black Country Communion, recording the self titled debut album with the band, showcasing his talents in yet another setting - that of 70's influenced blues based hard rock, revealing another facet of his versatility once again.

Recently we had the wonderful opportunity to talk with Derek about the new Black Country Communion album, his inspiration and influences and much, much more. In part III of our exclusive Black Country Communion series, please join us as we have an exclusive conversation with the "Caligula Of The Keyboards", Mr. Derek Sherinian. (Editor's note : Since the time this interview was conducted, it has been annnounced that Black Country Communion will be playing two dates in the UK a show at Wolverhampton Civic Hall on December 29th, and a gig in Shepherd's Bush, London the following night December 30th.) Charity Too Posh For Pink Floyd Reunion

A rare Pink Floyd reunion show of the three surviving members of the band  has been scrapped after the bandmates learned British socialite Jemima Khan was hosting the gig.

Roger Waters, David Gilmour and Nick Mason were all set to come together for the charity show until they discovered where it was to be held.

Mason tells British newspaper The Independent, "That particular event wasn't right for a reformation of Pink Floyd. I said I would do it, but it was a charity event for suits, and it felt wrong to turn a small thing into a big deal just because Jemima Khan was in attendance.

"Why play for a lot of posh totty (women) instead of some of the other things we should save that up for."

It would have been the group's first reunion in five years.

Reunion rumours have been rife since Waters and Gilmour put aside their longtime feud to perform together at an exclusive charity event in England in July.

However it must be noted a true reunion isn't possible due to the passing of keyboardist Rick Wright of cancer in 2008.

U.K. Vote Eric Clapton No. 1 Guitar Hero

Gibson.com is reporting that visitors to this week’s London guitar show Guitar Nation Live voted Eric Clapton as their #1 Guitar Hero. The poll was taken at the booth of instrument insurance company Allianz Musical Insurance.

“It’s great to see that the U.K. still has a strong rock star tradition,” Allianz’s Claims Manager Robin Stagg told the press.

Two more U.K. natives – Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck – also made it into the Top 5. The Top 5 guitarists are, in this order, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck and Chuck Berry.

While Clapton rose to fame in John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers, he frequently played his 1960 “Beano” Les Paul, which Gibson recently announced it would reproduce.

Another poll taken by Allianz Musical Insurance placed Les Paul’s original Les Paul and Page’s Double Neck Guitar high on a list of the most coveted guitars of all time.

Eddie Van Halen, Slash, Buddy Guy Among Those Featured in Upcoming 'Cry Baby' Documentary

Guard House Pictures is proud to announce the trailer release of Cry Baby: The Pedal That Rocks the World, a definitive documentary that tells the story of the #1-selling effects pedal of all time, from its invention in 1966 through its evolution into the present day. The effect was an essential ingredient in the creation of classics like Jimi Hendrix’s “Voodoo Child (Slight Return),” Metallica’s “Enter Sandman,” and Guns ‘n’ Roses’ “Sweet Child o’ Mine.”

This film looks at how engineer Brad Plunkett discovered and developed the legendary wah sound and how artists have used it to express themselves throughout its evolution. Guitar icons such as Buddy Guy, Eddie Van Halen, Kirk Hammett, Slash,  Steve Lukather and Zakk Wylde talk about how the wah has become a part of their signature sounds—while rock journalists such as Rolling Stone’s Ben Fong-Torres and Guitar Player’s Art Thompson explore the pedal’s cultural significance.

Learn how a simple effect became one of the most important tools of expression for guitarists everywhere. Full film coming in February 2011. For more artists appearing go to this location.

The Allman Brothers Band To Return To The Beacon Theatre For March 2011 Shows

The Allman Brothers Band have confirmed in a news conference held yesterday that the group will return to the Beacon Theatre in New York City for a run of shows throughout next March.

The group have announced that they will perform eight shows between March 10-19.

The March 12 show will be a special event, marking the 40th anniversary of the recording of the band's pivotal At Fillmore East live album.

Band co-founders Gregg Allman, Butch Trucks and Jaimoe Johanson announced the group’s return to the Beacon at a press conference held at the venue. Over the last 21 years, the band has made the venue their home-away-from-home, playing nearly 200 shows there in annual, multi-show stands. The Allmans had a one-year diversion from the Beacon back in 1995 when they played Radio City Music Hall instead. Last year, the band were forced to make alternate plans for a New York run at the United Palace Theater when the Beacon became home to the Cirque du Soleil production, Banana Shpeel.

At the time, Gregg Allman commented, “It’s a drag, but one monkey don’t stop no show.”

Tickets for the March shows at the Beacon will go on sale Saturday, December 4th at this location.

Album John Lennon Signed for His Killer on Sale for $850,000

Weeks before the 30th anniversary of his assassination outside the Dakota in New York City on December 8, 1980, the album that John Lennon signed for Mark David Chapman hours before he killed the former Beatle is going back on sale for $850,000.

The copy of 'Double Fantasy' was signed by Lennon when he left his home that evening, only to be gunned down by the deranged Chapman as he returned from a recording session five hours later. The record was found at the Dakota entrance by a maintenance man, who handed it over as evidence. It was finally returned by authorities and is being sold by autograph dealer Gary Zinet's  www.momentsintime.com.

Says Zimet to the New York Post, "The album is the most extraordinary artifact in rock and roll history. It has Lennon's signature on the cover and Chapman's forensically enhanced finger prints on the sleeve. There are evidence markings from the NYPD. I originally sold it in 1999, but it has come back up for resale. The current owner doesn't want to be named because he received death threats."

Hendrix Royal Albert Hall Documentary Due In 2011

Classic Rock magazine is reporting that a documentary based around Jimi Hendrix’s legendary gigs at the Royal Albert Hall is to be released next year.

There’s footage from those shows, in February 1969, as well as from the great guitarist’s European tour that year.

Janie Hendrix, Jimi’s half-sister and president/CEO of Experience Hendrix, told Billboard: “There were about four cameras that followed Jimi and the guys around in Europe and filmed the two concerts at the Royal Albert Hall, as well as them coming off trains, planes and automobiles, signing autographs, Jimi backstage getting ready, in his apartment doing little apartment jams with his friends and then later playing the Speakeasy.”

It’s expected that the film will get a theatrical release, as well as being available on DVD. There will also be a soundtrack album of live performances from the Royal Albert Hall, which have been previously released over the years but never to the satisfaction of Experience Hendrix.

In other news, a guitar formerly owned by Hendrix is up for auction next month. The instrument, on which he reportedly wrote a number of songs and used on his iconic version of Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower," is expected to fetch nearly $200,000. In 2008, a guitar that Hendrix set on fire at a 1967 London gig sold for nearly half a million dollars.

Beck will once again be backed by The Imelda May Band and its enchanting singer Imelda May, who joined Beck on stage at the 2010 Grammy® Awards for a spot-on rendition of Paul’s “How High The Moon.” Further details about tickets will be announced in the coming weeks.

Later this month, PBS will give fans a first look at a unique edition of this performance with the premiere Jeff Beck Honors Les Paul, a concert special that captures the first night of “The Celebration to Honor Les Paul,” which was recorded on June 9, 2010, what would have been Paul’s 95th birthday. Van Halen To Tour Extensively in 2011, New Studio Album To Be Released

According to Melodicrock.com, Van Halen will tour extensively in 2011, taking in North America, likely European dates and even some Australian dates, which local newspaper the Herald Sun stated Sunday that the band "...are very close to confirming an Oz visit next year." The line-up will remain as it was for the 2007 tour - guitarist Eddie Van Halen, drummer Alex Van Halen, bassist Wolfgang Van Halen and frontman David Lee Roth.

Numerous reports about new music coming from Van Halen are true. There is new music recorded with the expectation of an all-new studio album featuring David Lee Roth to be released in 2011.

Melodicrock.com says that Roth's vocals are being recorded away from the 5150 studio, with Eddie receiving various vocal tracks from the singer, but not always to the guitarist's satisfaction - it's work in progress between Eddie and Dave.

There is a deal in place between Warner Bros. and the band for a new album (as announced a few months back). There is a genuine fear from the label that the album may now not be ready before tour commitments begin. The album was definitely expected to be released in early 2011, but there has been so much going back and forth and re-arranging, so if the recordings are not turned in by early 2011, the label have developed a contingency plan. That is preparing re-masters of the Sammy Hagar-era catalogue, as well as preparing Blue-Ray releases of Live Without A Net and Live Right Here Right Now.

Additionally, they are preparing limited edition vinyl releases, which have just appeared on the Rhino/Warner schedule. 1984, Women And Children First and Van Halen II will be released on LP December 13.

And finally, the band apparently tested a few different producers, but the man at the helm for this album is one Ross Hogarth. In July he did make one reference to a new record he was starting: "The record I just started ROCKS!!! [it] will be amazing...that is all I will say..."

His latest album, the Jim Gaines (Stevie Ray Vaughan, Buddy Guy, Santana) produced 'Salvation From Sundown' was just released November 9th and is already receiving rave critical reviews.

Wes Jeans, from Marshall, Texas ranks as one of the "Top Young Gun Guitar Players". His latest CD, the Lance Lopez produced 'Live At Music City Texas', recorded at a sold out show in Linden, Texas on January 17, 2009 features the live raw stage power the guitarist has become known for throughout his career.

Manager Told Guitar Ace Philip Sayce To Stop Playing

Rock aaa.com is reporting that rising-star heavy blues artist Philip Sayce was told by his manager to cut back on his guitar playing and concentrate on writing pop songs, he’s revealed.

But he made the right decision: he didn’t change his music and instead changed management.

Sayce tells MusicRadar.com: “I was working with a guy who was saying I shouldn’t play so much guitar in my music. He said: ‘We should hide the guitar. Just stand there and look good.’

“Really? I went and wrote a bunch of candy-ass pop songs, and he wanted me to spin more like that. But I realised I wanted to rock out. ‘Maybe you’re not the right guy…’”

Sayce described the experience as a “mindfuck” but was able to rely on his experiences from playing with artists including Jeff Healey and Melissa Etheridge. Even then, though, he had to follow his own musical instincts – and the result was his first solo album, the critically-acclaimed Peace Machine.

He says: “I’d been with Melissa for three years, and man, we were busy. But we were able to record Peace Machine for fun. It was done in a day.

“After that Melissa’s like, ‘We have to record an album, then there’s a tour, then there’s the Grammys and shit like that.’ I was thinking, ‘I have to do it – it’s a stepping stone.’

“But after a time it began to feel like a circus show. So I went to her about a year ago and said, ‘I love you, but I have to do my own thing, and do it now.’ She said, ‘Yeah, you do,’ gave me a big hug and it’s all good.”

Sayce is currently touring the UK in support of new album Innerevolution, which is treating him to the experience of a much smaller budget. He says: “It’s very different staying at the Ritz Four Seasons and staying at the Travelodge in Marleybone. But you either fly the nest or you stay there. While I’m grateful to have played with big artists and learn from it, I was always kind of sad I wasn’t doing my own thing.”

The Who, Jeff Beck Among Those To Appear At UK Cancer Charity Show

British rock legends The Who are to perform alongside guitarist Jeff Beck, Blondie singer Debbie Harry and The Verve's Richard Ashcroft  in a charity concert against cancer.

The stars will appear at the HMV Hammersmith Apollo, London, on January 13th, 2011 to raise money for Killing Cancer, a charity that funds research into little-known cancer treatment Photodynamic Therapy (PDT).

PDT, which involves making cells more sensitive to light before exposing them to laser light, could help to treat cancers and precancerous conditions near the surface of the skin or internal organ linings.

The event has special significance for The Who, whose manager Bill Curbishley said he had witnessed a number of friends going through the last days of cancer.

"Only later we discovered that PDT could perhaps have saved their lives - and certainly given them some dignity in their final weeks," he said in a statement.

The Who have performed to raise awareness of cancer before. In March the band joined up with Arctic Monkeys, JLS and Noel Gallagher  to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Teenage Cancer Trust at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

It Was One Hit To The Body : Keith Richards Attacks Swedish Journalist During Interview

In our human interest story of the day, Spinner.com is reporting that  66 year old Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards proved he's still a 'Street Fighting Man' on Tuesday, threatening and attacking a Swedish journalist during an interview at a Paris hotel.

According to Swedish publication Aftonbladets, Richards reportedly got into an argument with the tabloid's music reviewer Markus Larsson during a promotional stop at Paris' Le Meurice Hotel for his new autobiography 'Life.' In August 2007, Larsson gave the Stones a 2 out of 5 rating for a concert in Gothenburg, Sweden and described them as "amateurs." Richards didn't forget the slight. In fact, he demanded a public apology.

"The meeting ended with the rock star threatening Markus Larsson and hitting him in the head," the article said, with Larsson adding that Richards hissed, "You're lucky to get out of here alive" prior to leaving.

The incident took place 10 minutes into the scheduled 30-minute interview before Richards realized who he was speaking to and "the mood of the rock star quickly changed."

"His eyes got black and he was absolutely furious," Larsson said. "He stood up and asked if we would put out the lights and settle the disagreement straight away. At first I was just surprised, I thought he was pulling my leg, but then I realized he was serious and then I felt uncomfortable and I just wanted to get out of there pretty fast."

Hailing from Grimsby, England power trio The Brew have been electrifying audiences throughout Europe in recent years with their heavy blues inspired classic rock.

Influenced by such 60's/70's heavyweights as Led Zeppelin, The Who and Hendrix, the band, consisting of father/son duo Tim and Kurtis Smith (bass and drums respectively) and lead guitarist/vocalist Jason Barwick have been gaining fans and raves from such sources as BBC Radio 1, inspiring them to exclaim,“The power of this trio has to be seen to be believed".

That power comes through loud and clear on their impressive third full length offering, 2010's 'A Million Dead Stars'(Jazzhouse), which offers a vibrant, fresh take while still being respectful to their influences.

Featuring Bonham-esque drumming and Jack Bruce like bass work by the Smiths, and Hendrix by way of Jimmy Page styled pyrotechnics courtesy of 21 year old guitar hero- in- the- making Barwick, wrapped in classic songwriting, the album's eleven tracks are filled with the kind of riff rock which will make any devotee of the genre sit up and take notice.

Kenny Wayne Shepherd To Play Iconic Hendrix "Woodstock Strat" on 'Late Night With Jimmy Fallon'

This Wednesday, November 10th, blues rocker Kenny Wayne Shepherd will be joining The Roots for a special Hendrix-themed sit-in on NBC's Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.

Shepherd will be playing the same white Fender Stratocaster guitar that Jimi Hendrix played on the morning of August 18, 1969 at the Woodstock Festival. It's the same instrument on which Hendrix played 'The Star Spangled Banner,' the recording of which was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2009.

Hendrix purchased the guitar in '68 and played it at many concerts including the Newport Pop Festival and his final concert at the Isle of Fehmarn in September, 1970. The guitar was acquired by Experience Music Project (EMP) in 1992 and has been in the Seattle based museum's permanent collection since that time. EMP has consented to bring the guitar to New York, accompanied by two curators, in support of Experience Hendrix's continuing efforts to bring the music of Jimi Hendrix to successive generations.

After the Fallon taping wraps, the Strat will be transported to the Beacon Theater, where Shepherd will play it as part of the Experience Hendrix Tour. The events will mark the first time in more more than 40 years that the guitar is played in front of a live audience.

Shepherd's recently released 'LIVE! In Chicago' debuted at #1 on Billboard's Top Blues Album chart -his fifth straight number one album.

Classic Derek And The Dominos Album To Get Remastered 40th Anniversary Release In Three Editions In March

Where's Eric!, the Eric Clapton Fan Club Magazine is reporting that the classic Derek and The Dominos 1970 album 'Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs' will be getting a 40th anniversary remastered release in three different editions in March 2011.

Although track lists haven't been revealed yet, there will be a new CD remaster from the UK master tapes, a two-disc "Deluxe Edition" and a "Super Deluxe Edition" with 4 CD's, 1 DVD and 2 LP's.

In late August 1970, Derek and The Dominos - Eric Clapton, Jim Gordon, Carl Radle and Bobby Whitlock - convened in Criteria Studios in Miami, Florida with producer Tom Dowd to record "Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs." Following an invitation from Clapton, Duane Allman of the Allman Brothers Band joined in on the now-historic sessions. The band finished recording in September and the double LP was released that December.

In 2000, the album was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. In 2003 the TV network VH1 named 'Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs' the 89th greatest album of all time. In 2003, the album was ranked number 115 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

End Of The Road : Emerson, Lake & Palmer Drummer Carl Palmer Says No More Reunion Shows

Drummer Carl Palmer has told Classic Rock Magazine that, so far as he is concerned, Emerson, Lake & Palmer’s 40th anniversary reunion gig at this summer’s High Voltage Festival will be the trio’s final appearance together.

Palmer elaborated in his exclusive interview with rock scribe Dave Ling : "We rehearsed for it (High Voltage) for a month, which almost killed me. Not the physical side of it, just keeping interested. Me personally, I didn’t need a month. But that’s what we did, and when it came to the gig what you saw was what you got. That’s as good as it will ever be (again). Everyone seemed pretty happy with it, and I think that gig will be far as the three of us can take things.”

Rolling Stones To Tour In 2011

The BBC is reporting that The Rolling Stones plan to hit the road in 2011, despite rumors that they had retired from touring altogether.

"Everybody's ready to go out there again," guitarist Keith Richards told BBC 6 Music. "Who said it should stop, and who said when?"

"Only we will know when it comes to an end, with a crashing halt," he added.

The Stones' last world tour earned $558m (£344m), but was reported to be the band's last after several dates were postponed due to ill health.

The European leg of the Bigger Bang tour was delayed in 2006 when Richards had brain surgery, following a widely-reported fall from a coconut tree.

He later said the incident had been exaggerated, telling the NME: "I was sitting on a shrub [and] I happened to fall off it the wrong way".

Speaking at the launch of his new autobiography, Life, the 66-year-old told the BBC the Stones were also gearing up to record new material.

Slash 'Disappointed' by Aerosmith's Steven Tyler

Former Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash has condemned Steven Tyler for accepting a job on American Idol - branding the move "disappointing" for the singer's fans and his Aerosmith bandmates.

Tyler has joined the TV talent show's panel along with Jennifer Lopez, replacing departing judges Simon Cowell, Ellen DeGeneres and Kara DioGuardi.

Kid Rock recently spoke out about the rocker's "stupid" decision, accusing Tyler of destroying the "sacred American institution of rock and roll".

Slash has now joined the protests, insisting he feels sorry for Tyler's Aerosmith bandmates who now have to work around the singer's hectic TV schedule.

He tells New York's Q104.3 FM, "It's really sort of disappointing to me that he's gone and done that, for whatever reason - a lot of it having to do with (the fact that) I just know the guy and the other guys in the band are bummed out and they've had a really rocky road for a while. And then just because American Idol is what it is, so it's hard for me to put the thing together."

Dave Davies Says No to Kinks Reunion : "Ray's An Asshole"

The Daily Mail is reporting : First off, Dave Davies wants to spell something out. There will not be reunion of The Kinks. Not now. Not in the future. Never. ‘I think the music is so beautiful it shouldn’t be tainted,’ he says. ‘It would be a shame. You don’t need to see silly old men in wheelchairs singing You Really Got Me.’

The problem is that there’s another ‘silly old man’ — fellow Kink and Dave’s older brother Ray — who thinks otherwise. Just a few weeks ago, he insisted Dave was ‘coming round’ to the idea of a reunion.

Dave sighs. ‘Ray’s an asshole,’ he says .

You see, Ray and Dave - the brothers behind one of the biggest rock bands of the Sixties, whose hits include Waterloo Sunset - don’t exactly see eye to eye.

In fact, they never have. Their volatile relationship, littered with violent bust-ups, is one of the longest running feuds in rock ’n’ roll. And while this creative tension was responsible for much of The Kinks’ success, it has also driven both brothers half-crazy.

Dave sought escape in drugs and more recently in spirituality. And Ray attempted suicide (he was later diagnosed with bipolar disorder, also known as manic depression).

Ray is now 66 and Dave 63, so isn’t it time to, well, let bygones be bygones? It seems not. They communicate - when they have to on business matters - by email and rarely see one another.

This week, when asked how his brother was, Ray replied: ‘Don’t know, don’t talk to him. Dave’s a very proud man. I don’t know what his problem is apart from pride.’

For his part, Dave can’t remember if it’s two or three years since he last saw his brother.

‘You’ve heard of vampires,’ says Dave. ‘Well, Ray sucks me dry of ideas, emotions and creativity. It’s toxic for me to be with him. He’s a control freak.

‘I hate to say it, but it’s got worse since he met the Queen [Ray received a CBE in 2004]. In his mind, it’s given him more validity, more “I’m better than you”, more “I’m superior”. With him, it’s “me, me, me”. He thinks he is The Kinks.

‘When I think of all the beautiful music we made, it wouldn’t have been the same if I or Pete Quaife hadn’t been there.’

Quaife is the reason for the brothers’ latest bust-up. Ray wanted Dave to perform at a memorial for The Kinks’ bass guitarist, who died in June, insisting: ‘Even the Mafia get together and make up when someone dies. If only for the funeral.’

But Dave refused. ‘Ray wanting me to come back into the fold is to make him look good. He had an album coming out,’ he says.

‘He’s cancelled the memorial, which again will be my fault. But after Pete died, I had my own private service for him on my website. I asked Elizabeth, Pete’s girlfriend, and his brother David to join me in sending Pete our love and they were happy to.

‘I wrote a few prayers and made my peace with Pete. I wasn’t going to get involved in using Pete as a PR exercise to bolster Ray’s vanity.’
