Blues Guitar Legend Eddie Kirkland Killed In Florida Car Crash

The Atlanta Journal -Constitution is reporting that blues guitar legend  Eddie Kirkland, "The Gypsy Of The Blues", was killed Sunday morning in a Florida wreck.

The Jamaican-born Kirkland, 88, was a former bandleader for Otis Redding and recorded with John Lee Hooker, among others. Kirkland performed Saturday night at the Dunedin Brewery, outside of Tampa, according to his website.

Shortly before 8:30 a.m. Sunday, Kirkland was driving his 1998 Ford Taurus when he attempted a U-turn and turned into the path of a Greyhound bus, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. The bus hit the right side of the Taurus, pushing it about 200 yards.

No one on the bus was injured, according to the FHP. Kirkland was transported to Tampa General hospital, where he died from injuries sustained in the crash. The crash remains under investigation.

Kirkland, who was born on a cotton plantation, moved with his mother to New Orleans when he was a year old. The two later moved to Mobile and southwest Alabama.

"That's where I came to hear the blues . . ., " Kirkland told the AJC in 1989. "My first experience with the blues was when I was a little baby about 2 years old. My mama used to take me to the cotton field and put me at the end of a row in the shade. You'd have people coming down the row, and it was a long field, and you could hear them singing. As a little baby, the music got into me."

His mother gave him a harmonica when he was 4, he said. At 12, he played guitar with the Sugar Girls Medicine Show before heading to Detroit.

In 1949, Kirkland traveled to Macon while on tour with Hooker. The middle Georgia town would later become Kirkland's home.

"If one person appreciates what I'm doing it's just as good as a million," Kirkland said. "A lot of places we've played, after I paid the band I didn't have a dime. But it was a good show. I was happy. That's it for me. It's my life."

Kirkland also appears on the 2010 studio album by classic blues rockers Foghat, 'Last Train Home' performing two tracks with the band.

Trailer For Upcoming Gary Moore Documentary Posted Online

A preview trailer for the upcoming documentary on late Irish blues-rock guitar legend Gary Moore 'White Knuckles And Blue Moods', -  due out later in 2011 - has been posted online.

The documentary, produced by Jörgen and Stefan Mossberg, reported to be around an hour long, features Don Airey, Jon Hiseman, John Sykes, Brian Downey, Eric Bell, Brian Robertson and Gary Moore himself.

Moore, who passed away February 6th of a suspected heart attack at the age of 58 while vacationing in Spain, was laid to rest today in a small ceremony at a Sussex, UK church with his closest friends and family in attendance, according to Planet Rock.

Jeff Beck On Possible Reunion With Rod Stewart : "It's Sort Of Chapter 2 Of Beck-Ola"

Guitar legend Jeff Beck - who just picked up three Grammys for best rock and pop instrumentals and best pop collaboration for his Emotion & Commotion album - has released 'Rock 'n' Roll Party Honoring Les Paul', a CD and DVD of last summer's rockabilly gig at New York's Iridium Jazz Club.

And as previously reported that, despite old frictions, Beck has recorded songs that may reunite him with Rod Stewart, who handled vocals in The Jeff Beck Group for its seminal albums Truth (1968) and Beck-Ola (1969).

"I cut some tracks and sent them to Rod, and I'm still waiting for a response," Beck tells USAToday.com. "Some are originals, and we've got great covers, too. It's sort of Chapter 2 of Beck-Ola. So yeah, ball's in your court, matey."

Stewart, 66, appears to be interested. He and Beck "are making progress and an upcoming project is looking promising," says Arnold Stiefel, Stewart's manager.

The raspy vocalist has avoided rehashing his youth. But the opportunity to conjure that old rock magic may prove tough to resist, says Rolling Stone associate editor Andy Greene.

"This would be a big deal," Greene says. "Consider that when our magazine reviewed the first Led Zeppelin album, they were panned as a poor man's Jeff Beck Group."

Ozzy Osbourne Still Gets LSD Flashbacks

Rock News Desk is reporting that Ozzy Osbourne stopped using LSD when he was still with Black Sabbath – but he suffers flashbacks to this day, he’s revealed.

The Prince of Darkness regularly finds himself “freaking out” at the smallest things, and says the drug which defined the psychedelic 60s era isn’t something he can recommend.

Ozzy tells Monsters And Critics: “I still get the after-effects. I call them my ‘wobblers’. In a flash every little problem freaks me out and becomes the end of the world.”

And he adds: “In my experience LSD is great until it isn’t. One minute you’re running down Miami Beach with a foam finger on your head – the next you’re sticking a gun in your best friend’s face.

“If you keep taking that shit it’s going to bite you in the balls.”

Son Jack Osbourne recently revealed he’s changed the name of the documentary he’s shot about his dad. It had been called The Wreckage Of My Past but now it’s entitled God Bless Ozzy Osbourne.

A plot description reads: “Ozzy Osbourne’s personal struggles have been shrouded in secrecy, until now. Featuring archive footage and interviews with Paul McCartney, Tommy Lee and others, God Bless Ozzy Osbourne is the first documentary to take viewers inside the complex mind of rock’s great icon. Plagued by self doubt, Osbourne went on a binge that lasted 40 years. God Bless Ozzy Osbourne will relive the highs of his triumphs as well as his journey to sobriety, which Ozzy regards as his greatest accomplishment.”

Fate Of John Lennon's Guitar Up To Illinois Authorities

An acoustic guitar once owned by John Lennon, along with thousands of other items of rock memorabilia, may be getting new homes. The rock relics are part of a collection at the Peace Museum, a Chicago institution dedicated to spreading the concept of peace.

Lennon and other musicians, including The Clash and U2, donated items to support the museum and its cause. Now that the museum has fallen into disrepair, Illinois' Attorney General Lisa Madigan is suing it for its assets.

Madigan's plan is to make an itemized inventory of the memorabilia before having it turned over to "bona fide charities actively educating the Illinois public in peaceful conflict resolution," according to the suit.

Authorities claim that the Peace Museum no longer has the resources to keep its collection in satisfactory condition.

The rumours flared up last month when Ozzy Osbourne told ABC News that the four original members were in talks about a new tour and possibly an album, though he stressed nothing was definite as of yet, stating: "the problem that we have is that if we do an album and it's anything less than where we left off, it's gonna be a big anti-climax."

Original Guns N' Roses Lineup In Talks To Perform At Next Year's Super Bowl?

BraveWords.com is reporting that KentSterling.com has been told that preliminary talks have already taken place to reconvene the most popular lineup of Guns N' Roses to turn Indianapolis into Paradise City.

Guns N’ Roses might be the only rock band with it’s members still living that hasn’t played a Super Bowl halftime show that could generate a real sense of excitement for what this year became a devolving mess.

After a significantly lesser halftime show this year with the overexposed Black Eyed Peas with Usher (who had to cancel a bar mitzvah appearance) and Slash from GN'R, the NFL is looking to make a splash, and reuniting Axl Rose, Slash, Izzy Stradlin, Duff McKagan, either Steven Adler or Matt Sorum, and Dizzy Reed.

Steven Tyler's Autobiography To Hit Stores This May

Rock AAA is reporting that Aerosmith frontman and brand new ‘American Idol’ judge, Steven Tyler, is set to launch his new autobiography ‘Does The Noise In My Head Bother You?’ in May.

The book is set to cover every aspect of the charismatic singer’s life, from his childhood in the Bronx, his early music career, his relationship with Joe Perry and the spectacular rise to fame, fall from grace, and return to glory of his band – Aerosmith.

Tyler has implied that this book will leave nothing to the imagination, which may make for an interesting read, as apart from detailing his career, he promises to also delve into his relationships with his 4 daughters, including actress Liv Tyler, as well as revealing the details of his epic love life:

“This is not just my take. This is the unbridled truth, the in-your-face, up-close and prodigious tale of Steven Tyler straight from the horse’s lips. I’ve been mythicized, Mick-icized, eulogized and fooligized, I’ve been Cole-Portered and farmer’s-daughtered, I’ve been Led Zepped and 12-stepped,”

“I’m a rhyming fool and so cool that me, Fritz the Cat, and Mohair Sam are the baddest cats that am. I have so many outrageous stories, too many, and I’m gonna tell ‘em all. All the unexpurgated, brain-jangling tales of debauchery, sex & drugs, transcendence & chemical dependence you will ever want to hear.”

When asked about his motivation for writing the book, Tyler stated “Thoughts of mortality” as his inspiration. However it’s likely that the $2 million deal he signed with publisher, Harper Collins may also have been a catalyst in the decision.

He later rejoined Lynott in Thin Lizzy for two stints, initially replacing original guitarist Eric Bell,  from 1973-74 and 1978-1979, recording the classic album 'Black Rose : A Rock Legend'. Slash : Guns N' Roses Reunion Possible

Guitar legend Slash has laid down the ground rules to a Guns N’ Roses reunion but insists his former bandmate Axl Rose will have to make the first move and apologize.

Slash and Duff McKagan quit the group in the 1990s after falling out with Rose, and they went on to form their own band, Velvet Revolver.

Bassist McKagan recently made amends with the singer and joined him onstage in London in October, but Slash has yet to reconcile with Rose.

And he insists a reunion featuring the original Guns N' Roses line-up will never happen unless Rose approached him first.

Slash says, "That would be a call I would be surprised to get. If that really happened, I would have to clean out my junk drawer, too, but I don't see it happening. But, if it did happen, I would do whatever it takes to at least have a conversation about it."

In other Slash related news it's reported that the guitarist will join the Black Eyed Peas halftime show at the Super Bowl this Sunday in Arlington, Texas.

Mick Jagger To Perform At Grammy Awards For The First Time; Stones Deny Tour Plans

Spinner.com is reporting that Mick Jagger will perform at this year's Grammy Awards for the first time in his 50-year career. The Rolling Stones frontman will appear alongside soul man Raphael Saadiq as part of a tribute to the late soul legend Solomon Burke, who died in 2010.

"We're thrilled, delighted, excited and very much looking forward to Mick doing his debut on the Grammy stage," Neil Portnow, president and CEO of the Recording Academy said in a statement. "It's extraordinary to many of us that the fact is, this will be the first time; he has never performed on the Grammy stage."

Jagger was last seen on the Grammy Awards when the Rolling Stones were given a lifetime achievement award. For that broadcast, the band performed via satellite from London.

On a related note, the band has responded to news of a reported 50th anniversary tour, which came to light via a pair of lawsuits between Live Nation and former employee Michael Cohl. "The Stones confirmed today they have no firm plans to tour at this time," a spokesperson announced. "Following the end of the 2007 A Bigger Bang world tour the Rolling Stones became free from any contractual arrangements or agreements with Michael Cohl. He is neither their representative nor their tour promoter."

Rod Stewart And Jeff Beck Collaboration Getting Closer To Reality

Gibson.com is reporting that it seems that two key components of the Jeff Beck Group might be coming back together. Rod Stewart had hinted at a reunion with Jeff Beck was a possibility in the fall and the project is now closer to becoming a reality.

"Jeff and I had a lunch together just before Christmas," Stewart told RollingStone.com. "He's going up to record some tracks with his band in February in San Francisco and to send them over to me, so we're making progress."

The record would be Stewart's first album of new material since 1998's When We Were the New Boys. Beck's most recent release was last April's Grammy nominated 'Emotion & Commotion'. But the album will be the first record for the pair since the late '60s gems Truth and Beck-Ola.

“They have some really clever things planned – it's mind-[expletive] stuff,” said Arnold Stiefel, Stewart’s long-running manager.
