Rockin' The Kremlin : Russia's President Medvedev Tells U2's Bono That He's a Fan of Led Zeppelin, But Prefers Deep Purple
Dmitry Medvedev told U2 lead singer Bono that he’s a fan of rock group Led Zeppelin over tea during a meeting at the Russian president’s residence in the Black Sea resort of Sochi.
Upon his arrival in Russia on Aug. 22, Bono joked that he would cancel a meeting with Medvedev after learning the president preferred Deep Purple to the Beatles, Kommersant reported.
Bono told Medvedev today that they have to overcome the differences in their musical tastes. Bono, 50, said he’s a long- time Led Zeppelin fan, while he knows that Medvedev likes Deep Purple. The president countered in televised remarks that he also enjoys Led Zeppelin.
Bono met with Medvedev before U2’s first-ever concert in Russia at Moscow’s Luzhniki stadium.
Medvedev, 44, has said previously that he likes to listen to classic rock. Russia’s president since May 2008, Medvedev became a fan of Deep Purple as a teenager living in a cramped two-room apartment on the outskirts of Leningrad in the 1970s.
Deep Purple, whose music was banned by Soviet authorities, were flown to Moscow in February of 2008 to be the guests of honor at a concert in the Kremlin and met Medvedev. In a 2007 interview with Itogi magazine, Medvedev said he had the entire vinyl collection of Deep Purple. At school, he also listened to Black Sabbath. He said last year that his teenage son Ilya is a fan of the alternative rock group Linkin Park and that he also listened to the band’s music from time to time.
