Nightwatcher's House Of Rock's Top 10 Albums Of 2008 : # 7 Back Door Slam - Roll Away
Back Door Slam - Roll Away (iTunes version) - The hard copy version of this one actually came out in the last half of 2007, so I was a bit hesitant in adding this, but the fact it was re released on iTunes last year, with the added bonus of a 5 track EP featuring live tracks and a video technically makes it eligible, and one of the advantages of this being my site, I can do what I want, so there you go.
The bottom line is that this trio of Manx blues rockers have released an absolutely stunning debut. Featuring powerful, soulful beyond his years vocals and guitar work courtesy of Davy Knowles reminiscent of the best of the late 60's early 70's masters such as Hendrix and Cream era Clapton, grafted on strong, gritty, mostly original songs which remain true to the genre's aesthetic, yet at the same time are infused with a youthful passion and fire, allowing them to rise above the well traveled grooves of the idiom.
So much so that if it weren't but nominally able to be placed on a list of 2008 releases, might very well been at the very top. But music such as this is timeless, so whichever version you get, don't quibble, just get it. And be sure to see them live when you get a chance, as amazing as the album is, they astound in a live setting. Touring extensively over the past year and a half opening for artists such as The Who, Kid Rock and Gov't Mule and playing numerous festivals including Bonnaroo have made them a tight aggregation, so if classic power trios with a ton of soul are your thing you'll leave being a fan, mark my words.
